Grannies Red Bunkie

Grannies Red Bunkie

Stoney Lake

This Bunkie was the Gold Award recipient for Auxiliary Structure at the 2024 PKHBA Awards.

This bunkie compliments the Grannies Red Cottage – providing additional space for guests or a quiet space to enjoy. Similar to the cottage expectations, our clients wanted the bunkie to have the same vintage, cozy feel. This was achieved through incorporating existing cottage elements into the new design such as the timber frame gable bents and interior panelling. The third-party designer did not leave any space for mechanicals and therefore we had to install the HVAC equipment was set over the washroom in a small attic space. You enter the bunkie straight into the smaller seating area and access through to the bedrooms and washroom through the display wall. Our client wanted display niches and shelves for family keepsake and the cuckoo clock collection similar to how cottage heritage displays.

The red cottage was staged to have construction started before the bunkie.  While finishing the bunkie in the circular sawn wall boards, the product became discontinued.  The supplier had access to other colours but all were limited and all were being discontinued.    A decision was made to purchase “whatever we could get our hands on” and finish out the bunkie with different colours in different rooms.  This achieved an unexpected result in that vintage old cottage aesthetic the owner was aiming for. The site placement for the bunkie was also a challenge as there are two seasonal runoff streams that could not be interfered with.  Careful placement and construction of a slab on grade foundation was successful in keeping the natural water course intact.   This natural feature allowed the bunkie to be accessed by way of stone bridges over the water courses.
