Grannies Red Cottage
Stoney Lake
This cottage was the Gold Award recipient for Custom Built Homes under 2500SF at the 2024 PKHBA Awards.
We were thrilled to work with this client again, replacing her parents’ original cottage with a new cottage while maintaining all the nostalgia of the previous one. Together we captured a generational old cottage that was referred to as the red cottage due to the traditional red siding colour. Reusing elements of old cottage in new design such as the timber frame gable bents and interior panelling. Re-claiming existing materials can be difficult as the Timberline team carefully removed, stored and reinstalled existing building materials into the new cottage. The client gave careful consideration on what wall walls would get this treatment as the amount of existing material was finite. Various small wall niches here and there were mimicked from the old cottage for placing family keepsakes. Certain wall areas needed to be kept free to display and honour the owners’ fathers’ military uniforms. Installing circular sawn wall boards nearly exclusively to ensure the new cottage had a vintage look and feel was very important to the client. We also made the 3-season room look like a traditional screen room but offers screen units in place of windows. Weather Master units were installed in a wall cavity so they may stack downward into the wall to give the impression that the openings are simply screens that you would find in the original cottage. Since space was limited on this same footprint rebuild, the design still manages all the essential spaces you’d expect in a cottage, although tighter, the layout offers a cozy cottage feel that the owner expected – a true cottage feel!
