Quaint Cottage Living
Stoney Lake
This adorable cottage was the Silver Award recipient for Custom Built Homes under 2500SF at the 2024 PKHBA Awards.
Our client came to us with a tired cottage they were looking to replace and build a dream home to spend their remaining years. They wanted the new cottage where they reside year-round to still feel traditional, vintage inspired and compliment their existing cottage artwork, furniture and décor. Our Timberline team assisted our client through the township zoning amendment, design/permitting, new build construction, final grading and landscaping. During construction, our client modified the pantry closet into a coffee station complete with glass uppers and a bar sink. They also incorporated a corner wood stove to observe the lakeview while enjoying the warmth from the fire. This allowed for a spacious wall to include the TV/entertainment built-ins. The vaulted living ceiling gave an opportunity to do a custom stained the tongue and groove and rough beam facade to fabricate the weathered rustic look to give the impression the cottage was aged. The kitchen designer elected to achieve this vintage feel with cream-coloured cabinets, antique nickel hardware and traditional decorative detailing on island legs and crown moulding. The old cottage was notorious for overheating in the summer months with the existing south facing windows. To be able to maintain the south, lake facing windows we calculated the required roof overhang optimally to ensure the windows would be shaded in the summer months and exposed in the winter months for passive solar design. Finally, the client was looking for maintenance free exterior materials resulting in a majestic barn steel roof and composite decking with aluminum railings. This gorgeous quaint cottage is a favourite!
